The Old Bushmills Distillery is located in Bushmills, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The company that founded the distillery dates back to 1785, although the date on the bottle refers to a royal decree to distil granted to a local landowner in 1608. After several transfer periods and periods of inactivity, the distillery has remained in operation after it was restored from a fire that ravaged several buildings in the complex in 1885.
Bushmills uses two types of malt, one without peat and the other slightly turbid in a triple distillation process, a method introduced in 1930. The water for the distillate comes from the Saint Columb's Rill.
