Don Julio is a brand of tequila made in Mexico, specifically it is the eighth in the United States and the eleventh in Mexico by volume, is located in the Chichimeco district, in Jalisco and was the first luxury tequila brand. Before the arrival of Don Julio, a tequila could not exceed thirty dollars and was considered a farmer's drink.
Tequila is made from Agave Azul Weber, harvested in the highlands of Jalisco, where the climate and soil are conducive to the development of the plant. Collected by Jimadores, Agave pineapples are cut by hand in rooms to cook for three days in traditional masonry ovens. It takes more than three and a half kilos to fill a bottle of tequila.
The name of Don Julio tequila comes from its founder, Don Julio González-Frausto Estrada, who began to distill tequila in 1942 at the age of seventeen. With the foundation of his distillery 'La Primavera', Don Julio spent the next 40 years improving all the stages in the tequila distillation process, from the cultivation of the Agave to the bottling. In 1985, Don Julio celebrates his 60th anniversary, and his children, to commemorate the event, create a tequila in his name. The guests soon showed interest in the product and spread the word. In 1987 Don Julio reaches the Mexican market, becoming the world's first luxury tequila and setting the standard for this category.
