The Balvenie distillery is located in Dufftown in the Scottish region of Speyside. In 1892 William Grant began the reconstruction and adaptation of an 18th-century mansion to turn it into a distillery. In May 1893 the first distillation took place in The Balvenie.
William Grant & Sons are the owners of three neighboring distilleries The Balvenie; Glenfiddich and Kininvie. The Balvenie was built very close to Glenfiddich, sharing the Robbie Dhu water spring. Everything and that Glenfiddich and Balvenie share distiller, the characters of the distilleries differ greatly. The Balvenie is one of the few Scottish distilleries to use its own milkshake floors and hand cut peat in the vicinity of the distillery.
In the 2006 International Spirits Challenge contest, the distillery won a gold medal for its 10-year Founder's Reserve, 12-year-old DoubleWood, 17-year-old Balvenie New Wood, 21-year-old PortWood, Balvenie Thirty and Balvenie Portwood 1991. It is the largest number of medals won by a distillery in a year since the first edition of the competition in 1995.
