Benromach 2002/2009 Pago de los Capellanes Picón Wood Finish 70cl 45%vol. is a limited edition of 1200 bottles of a Speyside single malt distilled in 2002, aged in ex-bourbon American white oak barrels for five years and finished for two years in French oak barrels that have contained Pago de los Capellanes El Picón, one of the most outstanding and recognized wines from the award-winning Pago de los Capellanes winery located in Ribera del Duero.
Benromach was born in 1898 and today is the smallest active distillery in Speyside, with a workforce of three men and an annual production of approximately 300,000 liters.
The distillery is owned by the renowned independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, is located on the outskirts of the city of Forres and uses the pure waters of the nearby Chapeltown spring. Since its inauguration in 1898, the distillery underwent numerous ownership changes and periods of inactivity, the last time Benromach was bottled as a single malt before the current owner restored the distillery was in 1900.
Gordon & MacPhail bought the distillery in 1993 and in 1996 announced the rebirth of Benromach. The reconstruction of the distillery began in 1997 and in 1998 the first distillates sprouted from the stills.
Preserving the classic character of 1960 Speyside whiskies, when coal was used and in times of peat shortage to make malt, all whiskies have peat, a light touch.
Although recently created, the master distillers of the Benromach distillery only use their senses to make whisky, in this process no computers are used, not even pressure valves, everything is done by hand using the sight, hearing, smell and touch of the experts.
