Togouchi 12 Years 70cl 40%vol. is a very peculiar whisky and not only because of its aromatic profile in which peat stands out. It is a whisky distilled in Scotland and Canada that ages in a tunnel excavated by the railway company of Japan in 1970. A Japanese blended with 40% malt whisky and 60% grain in which peat is more prominent than we have been used to coterranean whiskies.

Togouchi 12 Years

Togouchi 12 Years 70cl 40%vol. is a very peculiar whisky and not only because of its aromatic profile in which peat stands out. It is a whisky distilled in Scotland and Canada that ages in a tunnel excavated by the railway company of Japan in 1970. A Japanese blended with 40% malt whisky and 60% grain in which peat is more prominent than we have been accustomed to underground whiskies.

Togouchi is a brand of Japanese whisky made by Chugoku Jozo, a sake and schochu producer founded in 1918 near Hiroshima. In the 1990s, the group decided to start importing whisky from Canada and Scotland to be aged in Japan and mixed by Chugoku's Master Blender for the Japanese palate.

In addition to the peculiarity of not distilling whisky, carrying out a role similar to the independent bottlers of Scotland, all the aging of whisky is carried out in a tunnel of 361 meters long excavated in 1970 by the railway company of Japan, with the aim of expanding the line from Kabe to Hamada in the perfection of Shimane. The project, which was never completed, was abandoned until Chugoku Jozo Spirits Distillery re-imagined the tunnel as the ideal place, thanks to its constant temperature and humidity, to age distillates.

La Llar del Vi recommendation:

An atypical Japanese whisky that is difficult to categorize as it is a mixture of Scotch and Canadian whisky mixed and aged for the Japanese palate that does not just transmit the classic profile of the whisky from the country of the rising sun. A whisky that we recommend to lovers of Japanese whisky who want to deepen the Japanese vision on this distillate.
