The distillery is located about 25 km south of Inverness, in the small village of Tomatin (from the Gaelic Tom Aitinn, The hill of the juniper in Spanish) at an altitude of more than 300 metres (making it the highest distillery in Scotland) and barely 200 inhabitants, next to the river Findhorn.
The history of the Tomatin distillery dates back to the 16th century, when they illegally distilled alcohol for local consumption. The distillery was legally founded in 1897 under the name Tomatin Spey Distillery Co. Ltd. In 1986 it changed ownership and was renamed to its present name, The Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd.
During the 70's and 80's it was the Scottish distillery with the highest production volume, with more than 20 active stills. The production volume has been progressively reduced until today, when 12 stills remain, producing around five million litres of whisky per year.
