The distillery is located about 25 km south of Inverness, in the small town of Tomatin (Gaelic Tom Aitinn, Juniper Hill in Spanish) at more than 300 meters of altitude ( turning it into the distillery at the highest altitude in Scotland) and with only 200 inhabitants, next to the Findhorn River.
The history of the Tomatin distillery dates back to the 16th century, when alcohol was illegally distilled for local consumption. The distillery was legally founded in 1897 under the name of Tomatin Spey Distillery Co. Ltd. In 1986 it changed ownership and was renamed to the current name, The Tomatin Distillery Co Ltd.
During the 70s and 80s it was the Scottish distillery with the highest production volume, with more than 20 active stills. Progressively the production volume has been reduced to this day, in which there are 12 stills producing around five million liters of whiskey annually.
Tomatin is known for making whiskey in the highland region, among the single malt they make are Tomatin and Cù Bòcan. They also make whiskeys to make blended scotch, some own brands of blended are The Antiquary, The Talisman and Big T.
