The Islands region, officially part of the Highlands, comprises all the distilleries that are on an island excluding the island of Islay . Very few of the 800 islands scattered along the coast of Scotland are inhabited and far fewer have a distillery. Currently only six of those 800 islands have a distillery, Arran, Mull, Jura, Skye, Lewis and Orkney. The whiskeys made in these islands include very varied styles, from light and citrus to powerful with notes of peat and pepper, but generalizing, we will find a marked maritime influence accompanied by smoked and peat.
On Isle of Skye we find the Talisker distillery, which makes whiskeys with medium peat notes, the water used for the distillate production comes from Cnoc nan Speireag, which flows over peat, adding complex notes to the whiskey.
The Jura Distillery is located on the Isle of Jura and produces whiskeys with light notes of peat and smoke.
Isle of Mull is the second largest island in the Hebrides, after Skye and the only distillery we can find on the island is Tobermory, which makes slightly disturbed whiskeys, the barley is not malted with peat, but rather the waters that pass through the peat that contain a perceptible level of phenol and this is transferred to the whiskey, the result is medium-bodied whiskeys, fresh and fruity with light notes of peat.
Orkney Islands is a small archipelago of islands located north of Scotland, on the main island we find two distilleries; Highland Park that is characterized by malting its own barley and using a mixture of heather and peat to malte the cereal, resulting in a whiskey with subtle notes of peat, heather and honey. The other distillery we found in Orkney is Scapa, which, unlike Highland Park, does not use peat in the malting process, but uses water with a disturbed character that is transferred to the distillery with pipes to avoid excessive contact with the peat.
Isle of Arran, known as Scotland in miniature due to its diversity in landscapes, the distillery we find on this island is Arran , which makes fruity and creamy whiskeys with notes of toasted cereals.
In Isle of Lewis, we found the Abhainn Dearg distillery, recently created and that at the moment has only released a single three-year-old malt.
