Islay whiskeys are famous in the world for their powerful character that leaves no one indifferent, in their whiskeys, they tend to stand out from the rest, notes of peat , charcoal bonfires, salt flats, seaweed and iodized. The island of Islay is located in the southwest of Scotland, and unlike the islands, where we normally find one distillery per island, Islay is home to eight distilleries that can be separated into two large groups.
The first group comprises the distilleries located on the southeast coast, Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Ardbeg and Caol Ila, which make powerful whiskeys in peat, with medicinal, iodized and saline notes. In the other group of distilleries we find more varied characters, from Bunnahabhain with light notes of peat, the softest of Islay, Bruichladdich that produces whiskeys without peat, disturbed and octomore, the whiskey with the highest concentration of peat in the world; Bowmore, with a balanced character in peat notes and Kilchoman, the youngest distillery on the Island.
